When you go out on a first date there will rarely be a moments silence. The chatter is constant and often kept relatively light as you check each other out.
As a relationship develops, there is less and less need to fill in those awkward silences and if it is going in the right direction, the level of conversation deepens.
What is building up is the level of trust one has for the other and therefore conversations become more open as natural defence mechanisms start dropping.
You probably should not ask someone to marry you on the first date, you need to earn the rite.
