#0457 Simplicity Takes Effort

The thing I love to do as part of my work more than anything else is to simplify complexity.

If I can reduce the clutter for myself it allows me to better communicate it to others. Clearer communication means a higher likelihood they too will understand and may even take action.

When asked to review a presentation assembled by a client what I encounter is the curse of oversharing.

Way too much is stuffed into what then becomes “death by powerpoint”

The myth is that we need to prove we know our stuff and therefore the more complex the better we look. What you are actually at risk of doing is confusing your audience and when that happens they switch off.

As soon as they disengage everything from that point onwards is wasted breath.

If you are guilty of cramming slide after slide then ponder this quote from Einstein:

“The leader is one who, out of the clutter, brings simplicity… out of discord, harmony… and out of difficulty, opportunity.”
