The steady pace of a marathon evens out the dips but takes time to build the stamina to keep going.
Pragmatically you should be consistently chipping away in the background no matter what, keeping the pace when others get bored and switch.
The occasional sprint will take your business fitness to the next level. The background work is your rest time.
