If there was no 9-5 and you could work whenever you wanted, would more or less work get done?
My guess is, for the vast majority it would be less.
Discipline is more often mandated rather than self imposed.
Turning up puts you in a state of compliance, once there you get stuff done.
What else in your life should you be turning up for.
